With the Sydney 2000 Olympics about to kick off and a few games sites still not completed, Intrastructure Constructions was contacted by SOCOG to tender for the installation of a watermain running from the west side of Campbell Parade, Bondi to the east side which was the location for the Olymipc Beach Volley Ball stadium. The watermains was required for the amenities block that had recently been constructed next to the stadium.
The project was won by IC which quickly went into action. Due to the location of the project a few major issues had to be addressed. The possibility of damage to the environment or pollution caused by the construction of the watermain was a concern with its close proximity to the beach and crossing of a major road. No drill slury or spoil was to contaminate the surrounding area. The visual effect caused to the local area during the construction period was also a concern.
IC addressed all these concerns and decided the most effective method of construction was using trenchless technology. IC's JT4020 horizontal directional drill was brought on site to bore a hole under the existing buildings already built for the Beach Volley Ball site by SOGOC then continue under Campbell Parade until reaching a pit on the other side of the road where the existing watermain is postioned. The new PE pipe was then pulled back through the bore hole and connect to the new amenities building and existing watermain thus suppling an endless supply of water to the Olympic site.
The project was completed on time, within budget and with no environmental concerns arising. The traffic using Campbell Parade was never effected and complete construction was conducted unbeknown to most of the local residents.
